Steve King Wins Atco Raceways NEOPMA Xtreme Outlaw Pro Mods

IMG_0637The weather was great and so was the track. After a season of terrible weather, we’ve been experiencing i.e. rain outs, miserable, sticky hot weather and hurricane Lorraine …this was a beautiful day. Three special thoughts …1. I was delightfully surprised to see Bernie Cochran (owner of Star Transporters) club sponsor and friend come to see us. 2. Congrats to Steve Drummond who ran his career best 5.86 @ 241MPH. 3. Despite Mark Tinari’s health issues he came to photograph us. Our prayers are with you Mark.

Thank you, Len Capone and your entire Atco team, for a fun day. The hospitality, track conditions and prep were perfect, allowing us to lay down some fantastic times. Here is what happened.

Qualifying 2 Rounds
We had 14 cars show up for this race because we lost some due to breakage, other race commitments and hurricane. But the guys who came were ready to put on a killer race. At the end of round two of qualifying we had 7 cars in the 5 second range and at least two more capable of running in the 5.80s range but we also had Matt Dietsch Jr. suffer from a broken trans/ two melted piston.

Eliminations
First RIMG_0001aound …
we ran a 13-car ladder. The Steve King / Gene Pilot / Jeff Miller team laid down an unbelievable 5.77 @ 255 MPH solo pass. Vinny Budano (6.02 @ 239) beat Dwayne Wolfe who tire shook (6.44 @ 237 MPH). Kevin McCurdy (5.85 @ 247 MPH) beat Nick Montana (9.67 @ 87 MPH) lifting to avoid the wall. Jason White (5.91 @ 235 MPH) soloed as Jim Bersani suffered from fuel in his eyes working on his car. Dean Marinis / Harry Pappas team (5.85 @ 245 MPH) lost to Tyler Hard (5.81 @ 248 MPH). This was a real drag race with identical reaction times. Gary Hood soloed and eased it down he track as Steve Drummond couldn’t make it to the line. Rick Shainline (6.42 @ 222 MPH) fouled and lost to Ed Burnley who eased it down the track.

Second Round …
Vinny Budano struggled to get to the line due to shifter problems and a backfire hurt the manifold, so the King / Pilot / Miller team ran a solo (5.76 @ 240 MPH). Jason White (5.84 @ 243) beat Kevin McCurdy (5.86 @ 246 MPH). Real close race. Tyler Hard got a bye and eased it down the track (9.78 @ 90 MPH) Gary Hood won (7.13 @ 195 MPH) as Ed Burnley tire shook lifting ((8.75 @ 105 MPH)

Third Round Semis…
Steve KIMG_0606ing won (5.72 @ 257 MPH) when Jason White blew the tires off on the line and coasted (9.99 @ 105 MPH) Tyler Hard beat Gary Hood who broke the rear end on the line (Tyler 5.88 @ 220 MPH).

Final Round:
Steve King and Tyler Hard both cut good lights, but King won (5.71 @ 257 MPH) vs Tyler’s (5.99 @ 243).

All in all, great weather, great track, great hospitality, great racers, great event. Thank you all.
